was a further revelation when, growing up, it dawned on me that not
everybody else went to the same kind of school I did. I began to
understand that my experience of elementary and high school – going to
nicely furnished schools with state-of-the-art facilities in a safe
neighborhood of West L.A., and with very little diversity and an
obsession with getting students into Ivy League colleges—was not the
